Airport Code Quiz | Fun Fact
Did You Know?
Ever notice how many airports have that random “X” at the end of their codes? LAX, PDX, PHX, here is why:
It is a placeholder from when aviation was still figuring itself out. Back in the 1930s and 1940s, airports were using two-letter codes borrowed from the National Weather Service. But as air travel exploded, they needed more unique identifiers to keep everything straight.
The solution? Just add an “X” on the end. So for example, LA became LAX.
The “X” doesn’t actually stand for anything specific. It’s just there because they needed a third letter and “X” worked as well as anything else.
