  • Breaking up the itinerary allowed for the trip to become possible

The Spark

Fiji is one of those places that sounds out of reach to most, or at least at a level of spend that many are not ready to indulge. I was of that same mindset too, always thinking of the movie “The Truman Show,” where Jim Carrey’s character dreams of visiting Fiji. The island country has never been on our radar as a place to visit anytime soon. That said, as you may know from reading this blog, that is how the majority of our trips start. Not often do they begin with a whiteboard and a discussion of where to next. Fiji, like so many other amazing places we have seen, is a long stopover in a journey that is the trip. We are making it part of another Australia trip at the end of May 2026. Let me walk you through how we made it happen!

The Search and The Find

aI started on Google Flights and looked at several different options. We decided to start our trip in LA, arriving on a separate itinerary the day before and leaving the day after we returned. This allowed us to take a break and take advantage of the pricing that those on the West Coast enjoy when flying west to Hawaii and beyond. I looked at stopping in New Zealand on the way there or on the way back, but neither direction had a great option. Next, I looked at Fiji, and it hit all the marks on the checklist.

  • Is it easily accomplished on the route? For example, does an airline use this location as a hub or layover point? Yes.
  • Does the location work for a short stay? Yes.
  • Does it align with the budget? Yes.

During the booking process, I learned that we could extend our layover through Fiji Airways as a “Fiji Stopover.” From there, I found an Airbnb for less than $50 USD a night that promised a true cultural experience. It is a small hut on the beach with running water but no electricity. Meals are cooked by the host from their garden or from the sea. The listing describes it best:

“We are a quiet and secluded retreat focused on couples, families, and solo travellers where the emphasis is on ‘Fiji Time,’ slow and mellow. You will have plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling, walking along the beach, or simply reading your favourite book while laying in the hammock.”

The Logistics

As I read more about the island, I learned it would take about five hours to reach the Airbnb by boat from the airport. Based on the ferry timing, we needed to spend one night at a resort to make our early morning flight to Brisbane on day six. We chose a Hilton resort near the airport, as we would only be there for about 12 hours. Here is how the trip breaks down:

  • Day 1 – Fly from Wilmington, NC to LA and spend the night
  • Day 2 – Fly from LA to Fiji
  • Day 3 – Lost in flight crossing the International Date Line
  • Day 4 – Arrive in Fiji early morning, travel by ferry to the Airbnb
  • Day 5 – Full day in Fiji
  • Day 6 – Morning flight to Brisbane

The Cost

Here is what the trip looks like in USD:

Flight, Wilmington to LA – $400 per person I had a companion pass through my Delta American Express card, which made Amanda’s flight free. Had I driven to a larger airport such as DC or Atlanta, I could have saved even more here.

  • Hotel in LA – $190
  • Flight, LA to Fiji, Fiji to Brisbane, Brisbane back to LA – $800 per person
  • Airbnb in Fiji – $97 for two nights
  • Hotel in Fiji – 45,000 Hilton points, or approximately $300

When I searched for a direct flight from Wilmington to Fiji on Google Flights, the result was simply “No Results.” When I expanded the search to depart from Atlanta, Charlotte, or DC, the average came back around $1,100 per person. That is comparable to what we paid above, but without the night in LA and without the Brisbane leg included. When I ran a full multi-city search covering the entire trip, Google Flights returned a result of $2,200 per person, requiring an 18-hour layover in Taiwan. The bottom line is that any trip is achievable, and at the right price point too. You just may have to sacrifice some time during the trip and some time doing the research.

The History of Wilmington, NC: A Coastal City Worth Exploring

There are many beautiful cities along the east coast of the United States, but only three major coastal cities sit between North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia: Savannah, Charleston, and Wilmington. Each has its own charm, but Wilmington stands apart with its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and award-winning Riverwalk. Named after Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, and incorporated in 1739, the city once served as the capital of North Carolina. Today, you can walk past repurposed federal buildings, gaze across the Cape Fear River at the legendary USS North Carolina battleship, and feel the unique blend of Northeastern charm and Southern hospitality. As someone who recently moved here, I have come to appreciate Wilmington in a way I never could as a visitor.
