More Than a Beach Town: Entertainment in Wilmington, NC

If you have read the other articles in this Wilmington series or other articles on this site, you may know I am a newer resident of Wilmington but have been visiting family here for over 15 years. I thought I knew a lot about the Port City before moving here, and I did, but there was one category I knew very little about: entertainment. When my partner Amanda and I visited, we focused on family, the beach, and maybe some summer baseball (which is included below). Now that we live here, we still love the beach, but we have learned to love many other things the city has to offer that keep us exploring. The city is full of life, even on a Tuesday night in January. The arts are a big part of the culture here, alongside family-friendly venues and ways to explore Wilmington’s deep and complicated history. There is no way I can cover it all, and honestly, I have not even discovered it all yet, but below is my list of the top entertainment in my home city, Wilmington, North Carolina. Trust me, you won’t have time to be board!

Sports

UNCW Seahawks The University of North Carolina Wilmington fields 19 varsity programs competing in NCAA Division I’s Coastal Athletic Association. Baseball and men’s basketball tend to draw strong crowds, and games at Brooks Field and Trask Coliseum offer an affordable and energetic way to catch live collegiate athletics. Cape Fear Ghost Crabs The Ghost Crabs are Wilmington’s newest collegiate summer baseball team, playing their inaugural 2026 campaign at UNCW’s Brooks Field after their name was chosen by fan vote. It is a family-friendly evening out with in-game entertainment, food, and a genuine small-market summer baseball feel. Website: ghostcrabs.com

Wilmington Sharks A founding member of the Coastal Plain League since 1997, the Sharks play at Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium, affectionately known as the Shark Tank. The roster is made up of college players from across the country, and the Sharks are Petitt Cup champions with a rich alumni list that includes Major League players. Website: wilmingtonsharks.com

Port City FC Port City FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Wilmington competing in the National Premier Soccer League, playing home matches at Legion Stadium. Note: the original Hammerheads FC folded in 2017, and Port City FC is the current soccer club carrying the torch at that venue. Website: portcitysoccer.com

Shows/Theater

Dead Crow Comedy Club Wilmington’s dedicated comedy venue brings in regional and national stand-up acts in an intimate, bar-style setting. A great option for a low-key night out with drinks and a genuinely good laugh. Website: deadcrowcomedy.com

Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College One of the area’s premier performing arts venues, the Wilson Center hosts touring Broadway productions, concerts, dance performances, and local theater year-round. Its location in the heart of downtown Wilmington makes it a cornerstone of the city’s arts scene. Website: wilsoncenterarts.org

Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts One of Wilmington’s most distinguished buildings in the historic downtown region, Thalian Hall has been hosting performances since 1858. It is home to multiple resident arts organizations and presents everything from drama to opera to holiday galas in a stunning 19th-century setting. Website: thalianhall.org

String & Key Dueling Piano and Event Venue An interactive, request-driven entertainment experience where two pianists go head to head on crowd-shouted song requests. Equal parts concert, comedy show, and audience participation, it is a reliably fun night whether you come with a group or just walk in. Website: stringandkeybar.com (verify before publishing)

History/Culture

Battleship North Carolina During World War II, the Battleship North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific, earning 15 battle stars. Docked just across from downtown Wilmington, it is one of the most visited historic sites in the state and offers self-guided tours through the ship’s decks, gun turrets, and crew quarters. Cape Fear Museum of History and Science Founded in 1898, the Cape Fear Museum explores the history, science, and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear region. The museum is relocating and is set to reopen at a new Grace Street location in summer 2026 with updated exhibits and expanded space. Website: capefearmuseum.com

Airlie Gardens A stunning 67-acre coastal garden with ancient live oaks, seasonal blooms, a butterfly house, and tranquil walking paths along a lake. The Airlie Oak, estimated to be over 460 years old, is a landmark all on its own. Open year-round with a rotating calendar of events. Website: airliegardens.org

Cameron Art Museum (CAM) CAM’s collection spans fine arts, crafts, and design, with works of regional, national, and international importance, including pieces by North Carolina artists like Romare Bearden and Minnie Evans. The museum also features an outdoor sculpture park, including the permanent installation Boundless, which commemorates the United States Colored Troops who won the Battle of Forks Road on the museum’s grounds. Wilmington Railroad Museum A downtown gem dedicated to Wilmington’s deep ties to American rail history, particularly the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The museum features a large working model railroad layout, locomotive artifacts, and immersive exhibits that trace the industry’s role in shaping the region. Website: wilmingtonrailroadmuseum.org

Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens Built in 1770, the Burgwin-Wright House is the only structure in Wilmington from the colonial era open to the public. Constructed on the walls of a former city jail, the house is fully furnished with 18th and 19th-century antiques. The four-level terrace gardens are free and open year-round. Bellamy Mansion One of North Carolina’s premier architectural and historic treasures, the 10,000-square-foot antebellum mansion was built on the eve of the Civil War by free and enslaved Black artisans. The site includes beautifully restored slave quarters and Victorian gardens, offering a full and honest look at pre-war Wilmington. Website: bellamymansion.org 

Concert/Music

Live Oak Bank Pavilion Wilmington’s largest outdoor amphitheater hosts major national touring acts from spring through fall. With lawn seating, reserved sections, and a waterfront setting, it is the go-to destination for big-name concerts in the Cape Fear region. Website: liveoakbankpav.com

Greenfield Lake Amphitheater A beautiful open-air venue nestled in Greenfield Lake Park, hosting free and low-cost community concerts, local performances, and seasonal events. It is one of those classic spots that feels uniquely Wilmington. Website: greenfieldlakeamphitheater.com

Brooklyn Arts Center The Brooklyn Arts Center combines Wilmington’s rich history and incredible theater and entertainment scene, featuring a rotating lineup of shows, theater productions, and other events. It also serves as a popular live music venue for mid-sized touring acts. Website: brooklynartscenterwilmington.com

Cape Fear Riverboat Scenic and historic boat tours along the Cape Fear River, with options ranging from sightseeing cruises to private charter experiences. A relaxing way to see Wilmington’s downtown skyline and waterfront from the water. Website: cfrboats.com

Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park Most people come for the water park, but Jungle Rapids also offers laser tag, bowling, arcade games, and rock climbing, making it one of the most versatile family entertainment options in the area regardless of the weather. Website: junglerapids.com 

Festivals

North Carolina Azalea Festival Now in its 79th year, the Azalea Festival spans five days each April and draws over 250,000 visitors, blending gardens in peak bloom with live music, parades, arts, and long-standing Southern traditions across more than 25 events. Highlights include a grand parade viewed by more than 100,000 people, fireworks over the Cape Fear River, historic home and garden tours, and big-name concert performances. It is one of those events that reminds you why you live here. Website: ncazaleafestival.org

Wilmington Riverfest Named one of North Carolina’s Top Seven Festivals, Riverfest takes place every year during the first full weekend of October along the Historic Downtown waterfront. The free event features craft vendors, live music across multiple stages spanning bluegrass to jazz, a beer garden, car shows, a children’s area, and Saturday night fireworks. It has been a community tradition since 1979 and is a great way to soak up the city before the weather turns. Website: wilmingtonriverfest.com
