I'm Back

I’m here, I’m here!

Travel Updates and Upcoming Trips

It’s been a while since I wrote anything, I know! It has been a busy spring at home, but there is so much ahead in the world of travel! In the short term, we are heading to Washington D.C. and Baltimore for a quick baseball getaway. Then a bit of time at home to collect our thoughts and prep for another trip to the other side of the planet.

As I wrote a few months back, we are once again heading to Australia. That is twice in six months. I don’t anticipate we will visit The Land Down Under that often routinely, but with a few special family things happening, it is calling our name again. We are making a pit stop in Fiji because of a great deal with Fiji Airways. That whole trip will be fun to share!

As the rest of the summer unfolds, there isn’t a plan yet for a second large trip, but as you know, the majority of our trips start with something out of our control. I have ranked out over 140,000 American Airlines miles so those will need to be spent soon! I anticipate a lot of writing coming up around past trips that have been well documented and are just waiting to be shared. I am also working on the overall website, which is very much still growing, and I am very much still learning about, which is also fun!

I am currently working on growing the store as well. I have heard from many people that the t-shirts are what catches their eye the most, especially the ones with eye-catching and fun quotes. I am branding them more subtly, because while I do want the It’s How I Travel™ name out there to grow the brand, having it be the main message is tacky. I am focusing more on smaller logos or ones just on the sleeve.

There is a lot more to come and I promise, I am back at it!

How a Google Flights Search Turned Into a Fiji Beach Hut

Fiji is one of those places that sounds out of reach to most, or at least at a level of spend that many are not ready to indulge. I was of that same mindset too, always thinking of the movie “The Truman Show,” where Jim Carrey’s character dreams of visiting Fiji. That said, as you may know from reading this blog, that is how the majority of our trips start. Fiji, like so many other amazing places we have seen, is a long stopover in a journey that is the trip. What started as a Google Flights search turned into a beach hut with no electricity, meals cooked from the sea, and a Hilton stay on points, all for less than you might expect. Let me walk you through exactly how we made it happen.

Australia Chapter 2: Where did Saturday Go?

We made it to Brisbane, Australia! After leaving Wilmington in the early morning hours, a stop in Columbia, SC to work remotely, and a layover in LA, we landed on the other side of the world, so far from home that both locations can’t fit on my iPhone map at once. From being greeted with waving flags at the airport to our first flat white at Mount Coot-tha overlooking Brisbane, catching a local phone number, and choosing a “second wind” over jet lag recovery at Street Beach, this is how our Australian adventure began. Spoiler: it involved several pints, pokies, Chinese takeaway, and zero regrets.

    Hawaii | Worth the Flight?

Hawaii is absolutely worth visiting, but not for a typical beach vacation. After two trips to the Big Island, I’ve learned that Hawaii deserves to be experienced for what makes it unique: hiking to secluded Makalawena Beach, exploring active volcanoes, touring coffee farms with ocean views, and witnessing the breathtaking Waipi’o Valley. Save your 13-hour journey for authentic Hawaiian experiences you can’t find anywhere else.
