Avelo Airlines is “Simplifying its network”

Key Takeaways

  • Avelo Airlines announced simplifications to its network, resulting in flight cancellations for many passengers.
  • I received cancellation notices for my February flights with no rebooking options available.
  • The airline’s recent changes include closing several bases, including my home airport (ILM).
  • Avelo has historically been more customer-friendly compared to other ULCCs, but these cancellations feel like a shift in strategy.
  • I’m concerned about Avelo Airlines cancellations and will monitor how their transformation affects customers.

Yesterday, January 6, 2026, Avelo Airlines announced they were “simplifying its network” in a press release with the headline “Balance Sheet Transformation.” This morning, I woke up to two emails: both my February flights have been canceled.

My options? Full refund or rebook. Here’s the problem, there’s nothing available to rebook.

I understand flight cancellations are always a possibility with ultra-low cost carriers (ULCCs) like Avelo. But canceling with less than 30 days’ notice is beyond frustrating, especially when there are no viable alternatives in their network. I was flying into New Haven, Connecticut and returning home from Islip (Long Island, New York). The New Haven schedule doesn’t have any flights that work for my trip, and Islip has been completely dropped from Wilmington’s (ILM) route map.

I’ve tried requesting a refund, but their website keeps freezing. I’m guessing thousands of other passengers are trying to do the same thing right now.

The press release also announced the closure of several bases, including my home airport (ILM), though some service will continue:

“As part of this evolution, Avelo will close its bases in Mesa, Ariz. (AZA); Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (RDU); and Wilmington, N.C. (ILM). Avelo will continue serving Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (RDU) from New Haven, Conn. (HVN) and Rochester, N.Y. (ROC). Avelo will also continue serving Wilmington, N.C. (ILM) from Nashville, Tenn. (BNA); New Haven, Conn. (HVN); Tampa, Fla. (TPA); and Washington, D.C./Baltimore, Md. (BWI).”

I wrote an article last year praising Avelo for being different from other ULCCs like Spirit and Frontier. They’ve historically operated with more customer consideration. But this move? Canceling flights with no rebooking solutions, showing schedules only a few months out, it feels like they’re adopting the playbook I hoped they’d avoid.

Avelo is clearly transforming. I’m hopeful it’s for the better, but only time will tell. I’ll be keeping a close eye on how this unfolds.

  • Spirit to End Operations

Spirit Airlines is shutting down. After a $500 million rescue deal with the Trump administration fell apart, the ultra-low-cost carrier that reshaped budget travel in America is preparing to ground its fleet for good. Years of mounting losses, fierce competition, pandemic struggles, engine defects, and rising fuel costs finally caught up with the airline that built its name on rock-bottom fares and add-on fees for everything else.
So what does this mean for travelers? Fewer affordable options, thousands of jobs lost, and a major shift in how budget travel works in the United States. Even if Spirit was far from perfect, its absence leaves a real gap for price-conscious flyers. Here’s a breakdown of what happened, why the bailout failed, and what the shutdown means for the future of cheap air travel and the travelers who relied on it.
